Spiky n' Spoocy

Posted by brilokuloj on Jan 8, 2025

Ever since my move into my own apartment I’ve been more than a bit frazzled on the review-writing front. I keep trying things, saying I’ll write an article about them, and then it’s been over a year and they’re ancient history. But I think even dead LTOs deserve acknowledgment, so I’m aiming to put a dent in that pile.

In October 2022, Baskin-Robbins released their “Spicy n’ Spooky” ice cream flavor for the Halloween season. Wait, 2022? Seriously? I was certain it was 2023. I don’t know what the passage of time is anymore.

I was lucky enough to try it while it was available. Here’s my thoughts on that.

We have two Baskin-Robbins in our area, which we call the Good and the Bad one. The Bad one seems to run out of the monthly flavor within a week, whereas the Good one is awesome and has flavors from 6 months ago for some reason. Of course, the Good Baskin-Robbins is twice the distance away.

I was determined to have this stupid ice cream, though, so on October 31st we went to both locations. If you’re unaware, Baskin-Robbins offers 31% off on the 31st of the month, in reference to their “31 flavors” slogan. On that note, for my entire life I thought they were just lying about how many flavors they have, but it turns out it’s a metaphor for being able to have a flavor for every day in the month.

When I got there, it turned out they had next month’s Cookie Butter flavor as well, so I ended up getting a scoop of Cookie Butter and a scoop of Spiky 'n Spoocy.

WE'RE SPIKY AND WE'RE SPOOCY

Okay, here’s the real plot of this article. For some reason, my dear wife Paula cannot pronounce the name of this fucking ice cream flavor. Every single time, it comes out as “Spiky and Spoocy”. In 2022 I was on a bit of a Baskin-Robbins kick, for some reason, and so through the month of October I was excited to try this flavor. And every single time we discussed it, Paula would say “Spiky and Spoocy”, and I would crack the fuck up.

All of this culminated in one of the most beautiful moments of my life, which is where Paula said those magic words to the cashier. I don’t even think she noticed. Tears were welling up in my eyes from trying not to crack up laughing at my table.

Spiky 'n Spoocy is a mixture of white chocolate ghost pepper ice cream, dark chocolate ice cream, and spicy blood orange flakes. In short: spiky chocolate, with a spoocy orange twist. It’s also fucking delicious. It’s got a bit of that gross chemical taste I’ve come to associate with not-really-spicy “ghost pepper” fast food, but it does actually have a kick, and the orange is just brilliant.

When I lived in Minnesota, I’d occasionally make the trek to Sebastian Joe’s, where I almost always got their summer seasonal Dreamsicle flavor - but sometimes, if I was lucky, I’d get my hands on the autumnal Chocolate Coyote. That was chocolate ice cream with cinnamon and cayenne pepper, and it was also one of the best ice creams I’d ever had. Compared to it, Spiky 'n Spoocy is only a bad knockoff, but it’s one I would get again.
