Today’s card is the Six of Wands.

A horseman wearing a laurel and riding a white horse rides with their entourage, carrying a staff with another laurel upon it. The rider and their horse are richly decorated, as well are the footmen on the ground.

The Six of Wands is one of the Minor Arcana cards that can be directly compared to a Major Arcana card; in this case, the Chariot. Both signify triumph and driving action, but the Six of Wands focuses more on the after effects of such events. The Six of Wands emanates a sense of victory and pride. After a successful show of force, one almost always feels prideful and self-confident in themselves. With the Six of Wands, you are being told your time in the sun is coming.

OCCULT: DAILY DRAW – King of Wands

Today’s card is the King of Wands.

The King of Wands is on his throne, emblazoned with images of salamanders and lions. He holds his wand and sits upright, his free arm held up slightly with a clenched fist. Standing on the base of his throne is a wild salamander.

The King of Wands is a dark figure, whose magnetic personality makes him the ideal leader. His greatest failing is that he lacks the good humor of the other Wands court cards. Though not without his charms, the King is a somewhat dour figure who prefers to take a more realistic outlook on a situation. Humor is another tool to him, to be used where appropriate. The King of Wands is more focused on the long-term goal, and how he can work with others to achieve it. The King of Wands in a drawing is a sign of letting yourself take the lead, and remembering to stay charismatic.

OCCULT: DAILY DRAW – Three of Swords

Today’s card is the Three of Swords.

Three swords pierce a disembodied heart, as a cold rain pours down from grey clouds.

Heartbreak – what else? The Three of Swords is one of the most clear-cut cards in the deck. The symbolism of a heart being pierced by swords couldn’t be clearer – but even then, we must look deeper. The cause of these heartbreaks would take books to list: a breakup, a betrayal, a longing… But there is a darker side here, involving the heartbreak of others. Sometimes the Three of Swords is one of the most violent cards in the deck – a command to pierce someone through their heart in vengeance.

OCCULT: DAILY DRAW – Five of Wands

Today’s card is the Five of Wands.

Five people, each wielding a staff of their own, have entered an entanglement. It is unknown if the battle is for fun or in seriousness, but they fight with gusto.

In life, disagreements are inevitable. The Five of Wands’s aspect revolves around strife, argument, and disagreeing. When a large enough group of people get together, clashes of opinions and feelings are almost always inevitable after enough time. When this happens, it is in the best interest of everyone involved to lower their hackles and try to look at things from the most objective points of view. Otherwise, no one gets out unscathed!

Today’s card is The Hermit.

The Hermit, naturally stands alone. With his enormous white beard and gray robes, he holds a lantern in his right hand and a staff in his left. The Hermit lives a lonely life, always searching for Truth, but rarely finding it.

A hermitage is a strong position to take in the search for greater knowledge but for a true seeker it is almost always necessary. The Hermit is not the enlightened one, as some might interpret him as, but is someone deep into the path of inner understanding. By cutting off his ties to the mortal world, the Hermit is able to focus all of his physical and mental energy into the search for the ultimate treasure, himself. When you draw the Hermit, take some time for yourself for once! You are being told that it is time to withdraw, take a breather, and start looking for what you really need. Once you’ve found it, you can return to the world a new person.

Today’s card is Strength.

A woman in a white dress, with an infinity halo hovering above her head, holds the head of a lion in her hands. The lion looks up to her, totally cowed and tamed. Atop the woman’s head is a crown of flowers, and she is tied to the lion by a similar wreath.

Strength obviously signifies strength but by no means the physical kind. It is endurance and courage: though the lion could easily maul the woman, her inner fortitude renders it powerless before her. Psychological strength almost always prevails in situations where the physical fails. The card of Strength reminds us that with enough willpower, anything is possible. The strongest of bodies are meaningless if one cannot hone the mind.

Strength is especially notable for being the victim of Arthur Edward Waite’s inexplicable swapping of its original place and that of Justice. Waite felt there was no reason to explain his actions, and his switch has now become the accepted arrangement of the Major Arcana’s numbering system. We may never understand why.

OCCULT: DAILY DRAW – Knight of Pentacles

Today’s card is the Knight of Pentacles.

The knight is atop their black horse, wearing blued armor, and holding a pentacle before them. Their horse is especially strong and slow, and is loaded to bear.

The Knight of Pentacles knows what they want, and knows how to get it: Cold hard cash. They are careful, meticulous, and ensure that no detail is left unchecked in their quest for material wealth. This can be a downside to their quest, as their single-minded devotion to their own success can drive away others; it is doubtful the Knight minds much. Anything that gets in their way of becoming number one is just something to be plowed through.

OCCULT: DAILY DRAW – Page of Wands

Today’s card is the Page of Wands.

A youth in extravagant, salamander-adorned robes stands in the desert and observes their staff. They are young, inexperienced, but full of charm and passion. No matter what is to be before them, they are prepared.

Like the other Wand court cards, the Page of Wands is the kind of person that makes up the life of the party. Unlike the others, the Page is the youngest, and has not yet developed the kind of experience that tempers their endless enthuseasm. It may be a sure-fire plan to get themselves hurt, but the Page of Wands doesn’t really care. In the short time they have while they are ignorant, they want to embrace that ignorance and everything that comes with it. Now is not the time for thinking – it is the time for fun.

Today’s card is The Devil.

The Devil! Satan himself perches atop a post, posed in the traditional Lévian “as above, so below” motif. Attacked to the post is a ring with chains that lead to the necks of demons, one male and one female, both totally nude. Though chained, the bondage of the demons is voluntary; the neck holes of their chains are more than large enough to simply slip out of.

Though the Devil is one of the more ominous cards in the deck, it is by no means the worst. Its primary meanings involve bondage, being tied down, and a sense of being stuck. You are being held in darkness and ignorance with little hope of escape. However, you’re only a prisoner inside your own head. Once you realize that you are holding yourself down, you have the power to free yourself.

As well as these meanings, the Devil is a card of the more base pleasures. Sex, good food, drink; the Devil encourages these to an excess. It is tempting to interpret this as a license for wild abandon, but one must remember that is what the Devil would want.

OCCULT: DAILY DRAW – Eight of Swords

Today’s card is the Eight of Swords.

A person is bound, blindfolded, and trapped between eight swords. To move in any direction is to risk being sliced apart. However, their situation is not as dire as it seems: their bindings are already beginning to slip off of their body.

A dour card in a suit that only gets worse, the Eight of Swords signifies that you are in a situation where moving in any direction will just make things worse. Though it’s the most frustrating kind of position to be in, sometimes doing nothing is the best course of action. Our subject in the card is in quite the spot, but time will give them the help they need most. With patience, they will be freed from their predicament – but they must be patient.
